Thomas Cairns was a widower of 45 years of age. He was a colliery pumpman by occupation and lived at 8 Forth View, Wallyford, Inveresk. His father was deceased.

Jane Murray was 42 years old and single. She was a factory worker who lived at 146 High Street, Musselburgh. Both of her parents, William Murray, a joiner, and Elizabeth Greig, were deceased.
