Sarah, the mother of James, gave birth to him about two and a half years after her husband, James Donaldson, died. His birth certificate declared his name as James Murray or Donaldson, the names by which his mother was known, and stated that he was illegitimate. No father's name was inscribed in the parent box, and his mother was recorded as 'Jane Murray widow of James Donaldson coal miner'.

James married Thomas McGONAGALL, son of William McGONAGALL "Poet and Jute Carpet Weaver" and Jean KING, on 1 Mar 1697 in Saint Nicholas Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland.^{1 2} (Thomas McGONAGALL was born on 24 Mar 1870 in Dundee, Angus, Scotland ³ and died in 1873 in St Peter's District, Dundee, Scotland ⁴.)
