  General Notes:

In the 1851 census William Fulton's birthplace in Ayrshire is recorded as Kilbirnie. This must have come from himself or his wife since the children are young. A Janet Wylie was born in Kilbirnie in 1797, making her a likely candidate for William's mother; an earlier daughter Janet, of the same parents, was born in 1789, but presumably died at an early age since both girls were named Janet.

Her marriage to William Fulton in 1831, ten years after her son, also William, was born, is somewhat perplexing. Janet may have brought William up but not given birth to him, or she may have given birth to him but not married his father till much later. Or he may have been another man's child, brought up by William Fulton after Janet's marriage to him. Since the father, William, was referred to as 'reputed father', it may be that Janet was his mother and William Fulton became his father on marriage to her. We just do not know. ³

Janet married Esther McCRUDDEN, daughter of James McCRUDDEN and Mary LYNAS, on 13 Jun 1874 in Methlick parish, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.¹ (Esther McCRUDDEN was born on 7 Dec 1873 in Clyde, Glasgow, Scotland ⁵.)
