Baptisms

"1778 Feby 2
Dond Lawful Son to John Hendry Killocraw"

Note: Other children baptised and recorded at the same time called McKendrick and living at Killocraw were children of Archibald McKendrick and Magnus (elsewhere written as Manus) McKendrick.

The 1841 Census:
The family of Donald and Mary McKendrick were recorded living at Ballegreggan in Campbeltown Argyll. Listed in the entry were their nine children, all the males listed first with their father and then all the females with their mother. The children ranged in age from Sibla at the 30-34 years age group to Donald at 9 years old. All of the family had been born in the county were the census was taken. The only person who was recorded as having an occupation was the father, Donald, and he was a farmer.
The members of the family and their ages were recorded as:
Donald McKendrick 55-59 years
John McKendrick 25-29 years
Duncan 21 years
Donald 9 years
Mary McKendrick 50-54 years
Sibla 30-34 years
Catherine 18 years
Flora 15 years
Agnes 12 years
Susan 10 years
Mary 14 years

Note: 1841 census did not record relationships. It is clear from information from other sources that the entry related to this family.

Donald McKendrick died in 1857. His death certificate recorded his age as 80 years. He was a farmer and a widower. Both of his parents were deceased.

  Research Notes:

BALLEGREGGAN

The modern form seems to be Balgreggan. In the 18th century there was a distillery at Ballecreggan which was closed in the 1790s. After that it was used as farmland.

  Medical Notes:

The cause of death was certified by Edward Pickering surgeon in Campbeltown who saw deceased 10th June.

The place of burial was certified by Donald McKendrick's son.

Donald McKendrick, son of the deceased man, who had not been present where his father's death occurred, gave notice before the registrar at Killean on 4 September 1857.

Donald married Mary KELLY on 6 Feb 1806 in Campbeltown parish, Argyll, Scotland. (Mary KELLY was born about 1787-1791 in Argyll, Scotland and died between 1841 and 1857.)

Donald next married Jane GORDON, daughter of Alexander GORDON and Margaret THOMSON.1 (Jane GORDON was born about 1842 in Rothes Parish, Moray, Scotland 3.)

  Marriage Notes:

"Catherine (Gordon) married John Keith of Clachriach (Great Seal), who was murdered, December 2, 1589, at the Justice Port, Aberdeen, by her brother, William. This led to a feud between the Gordons and the Keiths. She was probably the mother of William Keith (brother of George Keith of Clachriach), who (with her nephew, John Gordon of Ardlogie) waged a deadly war on Leask of that ilk, 1616."

from Gight

Note:

1

John Keith was killed in 1587, not 1589.

2

Other sources than the above place the murdered John Keith as the grandfather rather than the father of the William Keith who was killed in 1617.
