Catharine's father, John who had been present where his daughter's birth occurred, gave notice of her birth before the registrar, Alex Paterson, at Shotts on 21 October 1875.

The 1881 census recorded Catharine Kavanagh as aged 5 years. She was living with her family in Shotts parish, where she had been born.

Catherine Cavenagh was recorded as 15 years of age by the 1891 census. She was a dressmaker. ^{1 2 3}
