  General Notes:

The 1841 census for Broomknoll in Airdrie recorded James' occupation as shoemaker. He had been born in Ireland and was in the 50-54 years age range.

In the 1851 census James was recorded living at 8 Broomknoll Street, 2 front land, in Airdrie, Lanarkshire, with his wife Jean and a lodger called Andrew McNeelly. All were born in Ireland. James was recorded as aged 56 years and a master shoemaker. His wife was 36 years old. The lodger worked as a pithead labourer. He was 24 years old.

The 1861 census for New Monkland recorded James Quigley, his wife Jean, and his grandson William, residing at 8 Broomknoll Street Airdrie. James was aged 64 years and was a shoemaker. His birthplace was Ireland.

James's death certificate in 1875 stated that he had been a journeyman shoemaker. He was married to his second wife when he died. He was 79 years old. 9 10 11

James had no medical attendant at his death.

The informant was the daughter of James, Letitia Campbell, who made her X mark before William Whyte, registrar at Airdrie on 11 January 1875. Letitia's address was noted as Buttery (unclear) Square, Rawyards, Airdrie.


James married Isabella McLEAN. (Isabella McLEAN was born about 1790 in Ireland 11.)


James next married Edward QUIGLEY, son of Edward QUIGLY and Mary McINNES.1 2 (Edward QUIGLEY was born on 28 Feb 1863 in Errol, Perthshire, Scotland 12.)

"On 16 October 1423 he (Alexander Forbes) had a charter from Murdoch, Duke of Albany, Governor of Scotland, etc., of the lands and barony of Forbes, to him and Elizabeth of Douglas his wife. On 4 November 1423 he had an obligation by his brother-in-law William, Earl of Angus, that he would not sell or alienate any of his lands, rents, or possessions to the prejudice of his sister or her heirs. On the 10 December 1423 he had a charter to himself and his wife of the lands of Meikle Fintry and others from John, Earl of Buchan.... On 20 August 1425 he had a charter to himself and his wife from William, Earl of Angus, of the lands of Easter Cluny..... On 6 October 1430 he had a charter from King James I. to him and Elizabeth his wife of the barony of Forbes with the lands of Kery (Kearn) and others in the earldom of Mar..... Alexander, first Lord Forbes, died in 1448 ; he married, before 1423, Elizabeth, only daughter of George Douglas, first Earl of Angus, and granddaughter of King Robert III."

James next married Jean PORTER in Sep 1846 in New Monkland, Lanarkshire, Scotland.3 (Jean PORTER was born about 1819 in Ireland and died 29 January 1877 at 12.15 pm in 8 Broomknoll Street, Airdrie, Lanarkshire, Scotland 13.). The cause of her death was gradual decay.
