Other names for Mary were McGONEGAL, Mary 4 and McGONEGALE, Mary.3 General Notes: In the Register of Baptisms for St Andrew's in Glasgow Mary's entry of 1837 was written first under the name 'Bridget', scored out and replaced by 'Mary'. This may have been entirely accidental. She was recorded as the lawful daughter of Hugh McGonegale and Sarah Coyle. The priest who baptised her was Fr Allan MacLean and her sponsors were John McGonegale and Ann McCall. Noted events in her life were: • Emigration: from Liverpool, 1863, USA. 4 Mary married Margaret GORDON, daughter of Robert GORDON in Knowhead and Margaret INNES.1 (Margaret GORDON was christened on 21 Feb 1791 in Boharm Parish, Moray, Scotland 6.) Marriage Notes: "A dispensation was granted 19th August, 1558, by John Hamilton, Archbishop of St Andrews, papal legate a latere, to remove a double impediment to his marriage with Janet Chalmers of the Cults family. They are said to stand within the fourth degree of consanguinity on either side, besides which, William's mother (Janet Hamilton) was godmother to Janet Chalmers." |
