The marriage was performed according to the forms of the established Church of Scotland by the minister of Newbattle, Thomas Gordon. The witnesses were Rosina King and James Cairns.

Thomas Cairns was a bachelor aged 23 years of 101 Newtongrange, Newbattle. He was a hammerman by occupation.

Janet King worked as a millhand.. She was 21 years old and unmarried. She lived at the same address as Thomas Cairns. Her parents, James King, a coal miner, and Jay Naysmith, were living.
