McKILLIGAN, James
General Notes: "Major MeKilligin had three sons and two daughters, all of whom, with the exception of the second son, James, died in early life. James McKilligin, who died at Calcutta in 1862, was born in 1803. In June, 1822, he went to Calcutta and entered the commercial firm of Fairlie, Ferguson, and Company. Up till 1847 his career was prosperous and he had amassed a fortune of about 60,000Bp. But in the commercial crisis of that year he lost almost his entire means. The firm was broken up, but the crisis once past, the business was continued under the firm of Gilmour, McKilligin, and Company, and of late Mr. McKilligan has been the only active member of the firm. The deceased was never married, He was the owner of considerable property in Banff, which he acquired from his father and grandfather. He never interested himself in these properties further than to direct that, after deducting the necessary expense of management and repairs, the whole of the rents should be expended for the benefit of poor persons in Banff." |
