The 1861 census for Old Monkland Middle District in Lanarkshire recorded Peter Vallily as 40 years old. He was head of the household at Hamilton's Land, Coatbridge that consisted of himself, his wife Catherine, his stepson William and a lodger called William Dornan, an agricultural labourer aged 22 years and born in Ireland. William too had been born in Ireland and worked as a coal miner. ²

Peter married Catherine McQUADE on 12 February 1854 in Old Monkland parish, Lanarkshire, Scotland.¹ (Catherine McQUADE was born about 1817 in Ireland ^{2 3} and died on 19 June 1871 in Thomson's Land, Coatbridge, Lanarkshire, Scotland ⁴.)
