In 1861 John and Jane McConvell lived in Dalmellington, Ayrshire with their children John, Mary Ann and Patrick. Their ages respectively were 37, 30, 8, 4 and 1 years. John was born in Ireland, and the others in Scotland. John worked as an ironminer. ^{2 3}
