William was recorded by the 1851 census living with his wife and some of his family on the south side of the river Clyde at 28 South Coburg Street, in the suburb of Laurieston, within the parish of Govan. He was aged 66 years and his occupation was recorded as linen lapper.

William was referred to as a 'farmer, deceased' in his son Arthur's death certificate in 1891. 2
