  General Notes:

Michael McGonigale was recorded by the 1901 census for Holytown, Lanarkshire, as head of a household living at Clydesdale Buildings, Clydesdale Road. With him lived his wife and five cildren, along with four male boarders, all in their twenties and all born in Ireland. Michael was recorded as 50 years of age and born in Ireland. He worked as an iron puddler.

In 1898 Michael's seven year old daughter, Mary, died. Michael was the informant before the registrar at Holytown on 28 July 1898, and made his X mark. His occupation was recorded as iron puddler.

Michael's son Peter died died in 1919 and Michael was the informant of his death before the registrar. He had been present where the death occurred, and gave notice of the death before Gil Hamilton, registrar, at Holytown on 20 May 1919 and made his X mark. His occupation was noted as iron worker.

When Michael died in 1921, his place of death was noted simply as 100 Clydesdale in the registration district of Holytown. It is presumably the same street mentioned in his wife's death certificte as her usual residence. Michael was recorded as 'iron worker married to Mary Ann McGowan'. His age was recorded as 69 years. His father was deceased.

Michael was a steel worker, according to the death certificate of his widow, Mary Ann in 1934.

In 1940 his daughter Helen died and in her death certificate Michael was referred to as a 'steel worker deceased'. 1

Walter S. Findlay MB ChB certified the cause of death.

Kathleen McGunnigale, Michael's daughter, who was present where his death took place, gave notice of his death before Gil Hamilton, registrar, at Holytown on 10 December 1921.


Michael married Mary Ann McGOWAN, daughter of James McGOWAN and Helen O'NEILL, on 23 November 1880 in Roman Catholic Chapel, Mossend, Lanarkshire, Scotland. (Mary Ann McGOWAN was born about 1855 in Coatbridge, Lanarkshire, Scotland 1 and died 17 May 1934 at 0.15 am in 85 Clydesdale Street, New Stevenson, Lanarkshire, Scotland.). The cause of her death was senility.


  Marriage Notes:

Michael McGonigal and Mary Ann McGown (sic) were married after banns according to the rites and forms of the Roman Catholic Church by James Milne CC. The witnesses were Thomas McAnulty and Mary McCarthy.

Michael, who made his X mark, was a bachelor aged 23 years and was an iron puddler. His address was 20 Centre Street. His father was deceased.

Mary Ann, who made her X mark, was also unmarried and aged 24 years. Her address was 12 Centre Street. No employment was noted. Her parents were both living.

The marriage was registered at Bothwell parish on 27 November 1880, William McNab being the registrar.
