The 1841 census for Methlick in Aberdeenshire recorded William Hardie living with his father and his stepmother at Auchencrieve. He was aged 12 years and was born in Aberdeenshire.

William Hardie was living at Goosepools in Methlick Parish, Aberdeenshire, when the census for Scotland in 1851 was taken. He was in the census list the eldest of nine children. William was recorded as 19 years old and recorded as born in Methlick, Aberdeenshire. He was a scholar.
