The 1841 census for Dowally in Perthshire recorded Peter and Margaret Hardie and a ten year old girl, Cathrine Cameron, recorded as a female servant, living at Baledmond. Peter was in the 65-69 year age group and had been born in Perthshire. Margaret was also born in Perthshire but was in the 35-39 year age group.

In 1851 Margaret Hardie was recorded living at Baledmund Cottage in Dowally Parish, Perthshire, with her husband and their granddaughter, Jane Hardie. Margaret Hardie was recorded as 49 years of age and had been born in Strowan, Perthshire.

The 1861 census for the civil parish of Dowally in Perthshire recorded Margaret Hardie living at Balledmund with her husband, Peter, and a grandson and granddaughter, James and Jane Hardie. Margaret was recorded as born in Strowan, Perthshire, and aged 59 years.

In 1871 Margaret Hardie, now a widow, was recorded as a visitor at the home of Donald and Catherine Robertson livng at Calvine in the parish of Blair Atholl. She was recorded as the mother in law of Donald and therefore as Catherine's mother.

In 1881 the census recorded Margaret Hardie aged 78 years, and described as a pauper, living at Calvine in Blair Atholl parish, in the household of Doanld Robertson, a reired letter carrier. She was recorded as his mother in law.

When Margaret Hardie died in Blair Atholl Parish in 1882 she was recorded in her death certificate as a pauper, and widow of Peter Hardie, weaver. Her recorded age at death was 80 years. Both of her parents were deceased. 2 3 4

R.D.Irvine MD etc, of Pitlochry, certified the cause of death.

Archibald Stewart, Inspector of the Poor at Blair Athole [sic], gave notice of Margaret's death before Charles Scott, registrar, at Blair Athole [sic] on 17 June 1882.


Margret married Peter HARDIE of Dunkeld, Weaver and Musician, son of Richard HARDIE and Unknown, on 27 September 1828 in Dowally Parish, Perthshire, Scotland. (Peter HARDIE of Dunkeld, Weaver and Musician was born in 1777 in Perthshire, Scotland, died 13 August 1862 at 10.30 pm in Balledmund, Dowally Parish, Perthshire, Scotland and was buried in 1862 in Dowally Churchyard, Perthshire, Scotland 5.). The cause of his death was supposed paralysis.
