TAIT, George

  General Notes:

The 1841 census for Stow, Midlothian recorded George Tait and his family living at 'Killsclyitt'. George's age was recorded as 30-34 years and he was an agricultural labourer. He had been born outside of Midlothian. His wife Margret and two small children were recorded, as well as two men called John Tait: the first aged in the 50-54 years age range, a woolen (sic) hand loom weaver born outside of Midlothian; and a younger John Tait aged in the 15-19 years age range born in Midlothian, a woolen (sic) spinner. These latter two may have been George's father and brother.

George's daughter Joan married in 1868. George Tait was recorded in her marriage certificate as a 'railway surfaceman'.

In 1871 George Tait was living in Edinburgh Road Killochyett in Stow Midlothian, beside his daughter Joan and her family. He was a widower and worked as an agricultural labourer. His birthpkace was noted as 'Hopekirk Roxburghshire'. With him were recorded his grandson George aged 4 years, and an aunt in law, Mary Brodie.

In the 1881 census for the parish of Stow, Midlothian, George Tait was recorded as the father in law of William Nisbet head of the household. William was the railway gate keeper and lived in the railway gate house on the new Edinburgh Road, Stow. His wife was Jane Nisbet, and, presumably, the daughter of George Tait. George was a general labourer by occupation and his age was recorded as 72 years. His birthplace was noted as Hopkirk, Roxburghshire. the seven children also recorded, surnamed Fairgrieve, were presumably 'Jane Nisbet's' children by her first marriage, and therefore the grandchildren of George Tait.

George married Margaret WALKER, daughter of George WALKER and Joan BRODIE, on 14 January 1837 in Stow, Midlothian, Scotland. (Margaret WALKER was born on 13 February 1814 in Stow, Midlothian, Scotland and died before 19 June 1868.)
