"WILLIAM LAIDLAW TENANT OF NETHER HORSBURGH"
In 1768 James Dickson, who had considerably improved the property, "raised an action to determine the proper division of the lands of Burnetland, one-half of which belonged to him and the other half to Patrick Sibbald, wright in Edinburgh and his sister Jean, wife of Mr. James Lorimer, minister of Yarrow. Hitherto the arable lands had been tilled on the 'runrig' or 'rundale' system, and the pasture ground was used in common. The following witnesses were appointed for 'making trial of the quality of the ground': - Robert Welsh of Mossfennan; Alexander Welsh, tenant in Stanhope; Walter Simpson, tenant in Easter Dawyck; and William Laidlaw, tenant in Nether Horsburgh." from A History of Peeblesshire by J. W. Buchan and Rev. H. Paton. Published 1925-7
