  • Born: About 1764, Murthly, Perthshire, Scotland 3 4
  • Marriage (1): CARMICHAEL, Duncan Saddler

  General Notes:

The younger Duncan Carmichael (1808-1877), a physician and surgeon, had in the 1851 census an "aunt" living with him in Buckie by the name of Christian Carmichael, aged 87 years a "Sadler's Widow", born in Murthly Perthshire.

In a letter from Reverend Mr Donald Carmichael (1781-1854) to his great-nephew also named Donald (1833-1902) the writer refers to "Auntie and the Doctor":
"St Mary's College, Blairs, 8 February 1847.

Dear Nephew, I duly received your favour of the 2nd January ......You will probably have heard of the Death of your Grand Uncle Duncan - It happened at Buckie in Novr. Auntie and the Doctor are well, and anxious that you should write her a letter, to show your
progress in writing and how you keep the knowledge of your own Language - on this you will be the better of a lesson from me before
I conclude."
Note: The use of the word "Auntie" here may explain the slight confusion in the Moray heritage website about whether Margaret Carmichael who died in 1848 in Buckie was the sister or the wife of Duncan Carmichael, who died there in 1846. The"Doctor" referred to is the younger Duncan Carmichael, living in Buckie, son of Finlay. This is the Duncan who had in the 1851 census an "aunt" living with him in Buckie by the name of Christian Carmichael, aged 87 years a "Sadler's Widow", born in Murthly Perthshire.
Lisa Curry. author of the article cited above, refers to the family in two footnotes to this section:

"35 This was 'Duncan the saddler' referred to in the conversion account.
36 Census reports for 1851 show the doctor, Duncan Carmichael, living in Rathven, near Buckie, Banffshire, with his aunt Christian, the widow of Duncan the saddler, living with him, by now eighty-seven years old: http://www.freecen.org.uk (accessed 13 July 2007)." 3 4

Christian married Duncan CARMICHAEL Saddler, son of Archibald CARMICHAEL and Margaret McLAREN. (Duncan CARMICHAEL Saddler was baptised on 3 January 1766 in Dull parish, Perthshire, Scotland,5 died on 25 November 1846 in Buckie, Banffshire, Scotland 1 6 and was buried in St Ninian's Cemetery, Chapelford, Enzie, Banffshire, Scotland 1.)
