MICHAEL
With this generation we have reached something of a brick wall in our quest to obtain detailed information. What is known about Michael Smyth?
-We know that he was the father of Robert Smyth, who was born in Ireland, so he himself was probably Irish born
-We know that he was born before 1825, since his son Robert was born about 1839-1840, and his birth year was likely to have been about 1810-1815 because Irish working men often did not marry until they were about 30 years of age
-It may be he was from County Meath (see the file of his son Robert Smyth), but we cannot be certain of that. It may have been Westmeath. It is certainly extremely likely he was born in the northern part of the island, since most Irish people coming to Scotland came from the Northernmost counties of Ireland (not the North as it is now- that came about in 1921 as a result of Partition)
-Michael was a manual worker, according to Robert's marriage lines
There were a great many individuals named Michael Smith or Smyth living in Ireland at this time, so without specific information or documentation, identifying which of them was this Michael Smyth is a virtually impossible task. Rationally, one can say it is not impossible overall; it simply requires the searcher to go on searching and dig up something not yet uncovered. That kind of persistence can be fruitful.
Michael married Ann or Bridget SMYTH MS UNCERTAIN. (Ann or Bridget SMYTH MS UNCERTAIN was born probably about 1810 in probably Ireland.)
