In 1891 the Semple family were living in Luggie Brig Nackerty Road in the Woodlands area of Coatbridge, Lanarkshire, Scotland. The census recorded James Semple as the head of a household of seven people, two parents and five children. James was aged 38 years and had been born in Beith, Ayrshire. By occupation he was a 'pit bottomer', that is he worked at the pit bottom but probably not as a hewer.

The 1901 census recorded James as born in Kilbirnie, Ayrshire. He was a widower by then. 2 3


James married Jane KERR on 4 December 1874 in High Church, Glasgow, Scotland.1 (Jane KERR was born about 1856 in Bothkennar, Stirlingshire, Scotland 2 and died in 1896 in Coatbridge, Lanarkshire, Scotland 4.)
