   Cause of his death was injuries received at a coal pit, lived 4 hours.1

   Other names for Michael were McGONIGAL, Michael 2 3 and McGUNIGAL, Michel.4

  General Notes:

In the 1851 census there is a "Michl McGongal" (indexed by GRO online as "McGougal"), living at 56 King Street, Rutherglen, aged 40 years, as a lodger. In the same household lives a "Patrick McGonagal" (indexed by GRO online as "McGonogal"), aged 27 years. Both were labourers and both were born in Ireland.

The 1861 census for Rutherglen, Lanarkshire, recorded Michael, aged 48 years, and Frances, aged 51 years, McGonigal and their two children, Mary, aged 24 years, and Bridget, aged 19 years, living at 59 King Street, with a boarder, aged 19 years, Peter Docherty. Michael was a coal miner, Mary a dressmaker, and Bridget a cotton weaver. All had been born in Ireland.

In 1871 Michel and Fanny McGunigal (sic) were living at 61 King Street, Rutherglen. Michael was recorded as aged 50 years and worked as a labourer. Fanny was recorded as aged 53 years. Both were born in Ireland.

In his 1875 death certificate, Michael was recorded as a "Waggon Trimmer" and married to Fanny McLaughlan. He was 56 years old at death. His parents were deceased. His brother, Patrick McGonnigal, who made his X mark, gave notice of Michael's death on 11 February 1875 at Baillieston. 1 3 4 5


Michael married Fanny McLAUGHLAN, daughter of Michael McLAUGHLAN and Mary FAIN. (Fanny McLAUGHLAN was born about 1818 2 and died on 2 February 1883 in Thomson's Land, Baillieston, Lanarkshire, Scotland 1 2.). The cause of her death was bronchitis over 10 days.1
