CAMPBELL, Hugh

  General Notes:

Hugh Campbell, a collier aged 38 years, and his wife Letitia aged 30 years were recorded by the 1861 census living in New Monkland parish with their children, James, Jane and Letitia. The parents were Irish born and the children were recorded as having been born in Airdrie.

The 1871 census for Airdrie, Lanarkshire, recorded the Campbell family living at 76 Black Street, Rawyards. Hugh was recorded as 48 years old, and had been born in "Balymany Antrim" -probably Ballymena, County Antrim. He was a retired miner.

Hugh Campbell was a coal miner according to the death certificate of his widow in 1907. ^{1 2}

MIX-UP

There are two Hugh Campbells recorded in the Old Monkland-New Monkland area in the mid 1800s. One was married to letitia Quigley or Tweedley, the other to a woman variously called Elizabeth, Betsy or Eliza. Both have a son, James.

Hugh married Letitia QUIGLEY, daughter of James QUIGLEY and Isabella McLEAN, in July 1846 in New Monkland, Lanarkshire, Scotland. (Letitia QUIGLEY was born about 1828 in County Derry, Ireland ¹ and died 9 March 1907 about 5 pm in 12 Buttery Square, Airdrie, Lanarkshire, Scotland.). The cause of her death was natural causes, probably heart failure.
