2. Marjorie of Huntingdon

Gilchrist 4th Earl of Angus 1

  • Born: About 1150
  • Marriage (1): UNKNOWN,
  • Marriage (2): Marjorie of Huntingdon about 1169

Other names for Gilchrist were EHISLACH, Gilchrist 3rd Earl of Mar 2 and EHISLACH, Gille Crist.

  General Notes:

There is doubt among the sources about the marriages of Gilchrist. As well as Marjorie of Huntingdon, others are named as possible wives and mothers of his various children: Ingibiorg Ericsdottir and Marjorie Haraldsdottir. Marjories of Huntingdon is named as mother of his heir. 3

  Research Notes:

The Mormaerdom seems initially to have rotated between two kin-groups, that represented by Morggán, and that represented by Gille Críst. The Mormaerdom was split upon the accession of Donnchadh, a descendant of Morggán. Donnchadh got the title of Mormaer and the wealthier and militarily more useful upland parts of Mar, and Thomas Durward, a descendant of Gille Críst through the female line, got the coastal, low-lying arable land. The line of Mormaers ended when Mormaer Thomas died childless in 1374.
