John was the informant of his daughter Elizabeth's birth in 1866. He gave notice before the registrar, William Paterson, at Shotts on 25 October. His occupation then was iron miner.

John Barret [sic] was the informant of his daughter Margaret's birth in 1875, and that of his son James in 1878. In both he was recorded in the certificate as a coal miner.

The 1881 census for New Monkland recorded John and Elizabeth Barrett and their children living at 17 Gardner Land. John was recorded as aged 42 years and had been born in Airdrie. He was a coal miner.

The 1900 US Census, taken on 2 June, recorded John and Elizabeth Barrett and their son Frank living in Punxsutawney, Jefferson, Pennsylvania. John Barrett's place and date of birth was noted as Scotland 28 May 1838, and his age at his last birthday as 62 years. Both his parents were born in Ireland.   Research Notes:

There are a few errors and discrepancies in reported dates in this family's history. For example, their marriage certificate recorded their date of marriage as 11 June 1863, but in the birth certificate of their daughter Elizabeth in 1866, John Barrett, the informant, gave his marriage date as 10 June 1863. In his daughter Margaret's birth certificate the marriage was in 1864 at Wishaw, and in that of James it was 11 June 1866. John was the informant in those too. This is not so unusual. Statutory registration began in Scotland only in 1855. Many people were not used to recalling precise dates, and for some it took a bit of practice!
